THREE TRUTHS Guest writer. Roland Peters

Roland Peters writes:  I grew up in a family in a rural area, going faithfully to an Anglican Church once a month.  While knowing about Jesus the Saviour I didn’t know him as my Saviour.

I had no assurance of his grace on my life and with that feared that if I died without my sins forgiven I would go straight to hell.  I didn’t want to go to hell, but didn’t know what to do about it.

I heard a man preach when I was twenty-nine years old who asked, “If you had five minutes to live, what would you tell the person with you about Christianity?”  I thought I could do that.  I tried it out on the tractor, but after thirty minutes, it seemed like God said, “you don’t know what you are talking about, do you?  You are saying nothing.”  And I knew he was right and for the first time I said, “God show me.”

I started reading the New Testament seeking answers and God showed me.  Like a lot of people it was John 3:16 that spoke to me and broke through to my understanding.

Waiting to be found. Alone, feeling abandoned. In the struggle of life many feel abandoned, unaware that God is there for them. They only need to follow the steps taken by Roland Peters and they will not experience abandonment again

I knew at that moment that God loved me and gave me his Son Jesus, so that if I believed in him – believed in him, I would not perish – not perish but have eternal life.  Yes!  I did believe and found I had eternal life!  My life was changed; he made me new and alive.  We were baptized in the Holy Spirit and discovered that God really was the Healer.

I devoured God’s word with unexpected joy, continually receiving waves of his love and assurance over and over again.  It’s still happening thirty-five years later.

God freed me from the booze.  My wife Sonia believed too and together we worked on Beach Missions at Streaky Bay, learning guitar and puppetry.  I worked at preaching and youth ministry in schools.

Three lillies – three truths. The Son; the sacrifice, the eternal life.

There are three important truths from the Word of God that confront us:  At Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration God said, yes, really said, “This is my beloved son, whom I love.  With him I am well pleased, listen to him.”  God said, “I have a son, it is Jesus”, which is in stark contrast to many other militant religions, that say God has no son.

God has a testimony and this is his testimony: God has given us eternal life and this life is in him.  1 John Chapter 5; “and anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart”.  This is greatly encouraging for those who religiously think they can never claim to have eternal life because they might do something wrong to deny him.

Jesus is the great High Priest, Hebrews chapter 7 – 10.  “He offered for all times, and all sin, one sacrifice for sin, namely himself, and then he sat down at the right hand of God, ever interceding for us, mediating the new covenant.  Because he always lives, he is able to save completely those who came to God through him and there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.”
